Can You Cook Food at Home?

Food is any substance eaten in order to provide nutrition to an organism. Generally speaking food is of plant, animal, or fungi origin, and has vital nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or other nutrients that are required for the growth and maintenance of an organism. Since living organisms need a varied diet to survive, it is not surprising to note that the types and quantities of food available to us are extremely varied. For example we can find protein abundantly in meat and fish, but at the same time find sugar in plants, roots and nuts. Each food type and its availability varies on different places and different times of year, therefore affecting crop yield.

When I look back over the last few years I have seen food prices increase steadily. With the prices I see food becoming more expensive. This applies to both local as well as international trade, however I notice the price increases being targeted towards food which I do not like. The first thing I look for when shopping for food is to see if the food I want is readily available. In other words I look to buy food that I can cook.

Meat is my favourite food, however it is quite expensive. Therefore when shopping for meat I look to find alternatives that will help me reduce my costs. The first example of this is meat products, which I usually replace with cheaper alternatives such as fish, cheese, eggs, and pulses. However there are some good cheap sources of meat, such as venison and wild Game, which are also easily prepared and very nutritious.

Another example is buying food processing equipment, which is used for steaming, baking, grilling, saucing and many other things. These products are used in the cooking process and can help save money when cooking your foods at home. However they can also be used for eating out, and most restaurants have this type of equipment in their kitchen. I think that many people would agree that there is a point where the food processing stops being classed as cooking. Therefore I do not think that it is necessary to buy food processing equipment.

Another example of food that can be cooked at home is sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are a good source of carbohydrates and can also be used in the same way as meats. If you have a food processor, which I use, you can easily grind them into a mix of pulp and water to make your own sweet potato soup. I have seen this on numerous websites and in many cookbooks and it is a very tasty and healthy alternative to eating sweet potatoes. The only downfall I see is that you may have to make the soup several times before you get the consistency of the soup right.

Finally one more example of food that can be cooked at home is lentils. Lentils can be eaten as a great side dish or used in a soup or other dish. They can be steamed also, but are better eaten raw. I have not tried this food personally, but I imagine that it is very good. As with all foods though, there is always the chance that you will not like what you have eaten and will want to try something else.
